I danced en pointe and ballet for 10 years, and so I love painting ballet shoes and ballerinas.
I remember when my dance teacher, Miss Laura Cote, went into her storeroom closet and brought out a box full of her old leg warmers and skirts. She let us "big girls" (~12 or 13 years old) choose what we wanted. I didn't want to rush to the front of the line, as I wanted to let the other girls choose first. Miss Laura saw me waiting and handed me this pair of green leg warmers. She told me they were her favorite. From that moment on, they were my only pair and my favorite too.
Just seeing them here brings back good memories for me.
I hope I can bring back or help share those memories with you through this painting.
You'll find the point shoe shadowing resulted in a lovely texture that is smooth yet raised. The folds in the leg warmers jump out at you and the shadows from the shoes and legs remind me of how the sun would shine into the dance studio. <3
